In the natural world there are various but predictable amounts of isotopes of any given element. Since the atomic weight of these isotopes are different (because of the different number of neutrons) the average atomic weight is related to he average number of neutrons the atomic weight is not a whole number. It's like saying the average family has 2.5 children.
